DRAWING tools and METALPOINT
Silverpoint and Copperpoint pens allow for a precise, fine line drawing technique. Drawings are made by moving the silver or copper wire across a surface prepared with gesso or primer which leaves a mark of microscopic metal particles. These metalpoint pens are handcrafted using a variety of environmentally sustainable woods.
Porte Crayons are traditional drawing tools. They are used by artists to hold pencils, conte, crayons, chalk, graphite sticks or charcoals of either 7.5mm or 9mm diameter.
The extra length gained through using a porte crayon can support artist’s to vary mark-making with greater flexibility and range of movement.
We make our Porte Crayon Holders using a variety of environmentally sustainable woods, including sustainably sourced Victorian Ash.

DRAWING tools and METALPOINT – technical information
Silverpoint and Copperpoint tools or pens allow a broad range of marks for a fine, precise drawing technique.
Drawings are made by drawing the silver or copper tip across a surface that is very finely abrasive, often prepared with a gesso or primer.
The fine mark is comprised of the metal of the tip and will oxidise in time to a warm brown in the case of the silver or a greenish tone in the case of the copper. Metal point is ideal for under drawing or layout of paintings as it does not smear or contaminate paint as graphite can. Metal point is incredibly durable.
Fisher Wells create their pens by attaching a Metalpoint tip into polished hand turned wooden shafts. The finished product acts like a pencil that hardly wears down. It leaves a fine, distinctive mark. Tone can also be applied to drawings through shading and hatching techniques.
Sizes of the pens and tools vary depending on the wood selected. Each pen is handcrafted. The wooden shaft is turned using a variety of environmentally sustainable woods.
